Veränderung heißt, Altbewährtes hinter sich zu lassen und Neues anzugehen. So war auch auf der letztjährigen Präsidiumssitzung des FIR e. V. im November eine Mischung aus Abschieds- und Aufbruchstimmung zu spüren, als es darum ging, die Nachfolge von Professor Volker Stich als Geschäftsführer des FIR endgültig zu besiegeln. Am 15.11.2022 berief die Präsidiumssitzung des FIR e. V. Professor Wolfgang Boos satzungsgemäß zum neuen Geschäftsführer des FIR an der RWTH Aachen. Am 01.01.2023 trat Professor Boos sein Amt an. Er verantwortet das FIR-Kerngeschäft und gleichzeitig die Leitung des Clusters Smart Logistik auf dem RWTH Aachen Campus. 26 Jahre leitete Professor Stich die Geschicke des FIR mit sehr viel Herzblut. Als Mitglied des Forschungsbeirats und seit Oktober 2017 auch als Vorsitzender des FIR-e. V.-Präsidiums durfte ich ihn über den gesamten Zeitraum hinweg begleiten und viele Entscheidungen mitgestalten. Diejenige mit der größten Tragweite mussten wir zum Ende seiner Amtszeit treffen: die Regelung seiner Nachfolge. Sie hat nicht nur Auswirkungen auf das FIR, sondern auf den gesamten institutionellen Raum, in dem sich das FIR als An-Institut der RWTH Aachen und clusterleitendes Institut bewegt. Entsprechend komplex gestaltete sich der Findungsprozess. Bereits drei Jahre zuvor diskutierten wir im Kreis des FIR-e. V.- Präsidiums verschiedene Optionen. Zunächst ging es dabei um Fragen zur Gestaltung einer zukunftsfähigen Führungsstruktur, damit das FIR auch weiterhin seinem Auftrag in Forschung, Lehre und Wissenstransfer in optimaler Weise nachkommen kann. Die Suche nach der neuen Geschäftsführerin / dem neuen Geschäftsführer konkretisierte sich Anfang 2022 mit der Ausschreibung der Vakanz. Um den darauf folgenden Auswahlprozess auf eine breite Basis zu stellen, gründeten wir aus dem Präsidium des FIR e. V. heraus eine Findungskommission mit Vertreter:innen des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen sowie von Forschungsvereinigungen, mit FIR-Direktor Professor Schuh, FIRGeschäftsführer Professor Stich und mir als Vorsitzendem des FIR-e. V.-Präsidiums. Nach Sichtung aller Unterlagen und verschiedenen ausführlichen Gesprächsrunden mit geeigneten Kandidaten fiel die Wahl einvernehmlich auf Professor Boos. Ich freue mich darüber außerordentlich und bin überzeugt, dass Professor Boos genau der Richtige ist, um das FIR und die Center im Cluster Smart Logistik erfolgreich weiterzuentwickeln, passende Schwerpunkte im Kontext von Kreislaufwirtschaft und Digitalisierung zu setzen und das Zusammenwachsen von Forschung und Industrie weiter voranzutreiben. Mit einem eigenen Lehrauftrag an der RWTH Aachen sowie als ehemaliger Geschäftsführer des WZL der RWTH Aachen und CEO weiterer Entitäten, darunter auch der WBA Aachener Werkzeugbau Akademie GmbH und der DFA Demonstrationsfabrik Aachen GmbH, bringt er die notwendige Erfahrung mit – Foreword Change means leaving behind the tried and tested and tackling something new. Last year's FIR e.V. board meeting in November was characterized by a mixture of fond farewells and new beginnings, when the change in leadership at FIR at RWTH Aachen University was officially formalized: On November 15, 2022, in accordance with the statutes of the association, the Board of Directors of FIR e. V. appointed Professor Wolfgang Boos as the new managing director of FIR. Succeeding Professor Volker Stich, Wolfgang Boos took office on January 1, 2023. He is responsible for managing FIR’s core business as well as heading the Smart Logistics Cluster on RWTH Aachen Campus. For 26 years, Professor Stich has led FIR with vision and energy, putting his heart and soul into his work. As a member of the Research Advisory Board and, since October 2017, also as chair of FIR e. V.’s Board of Directors, I had the luck to accompany him throughout the entire period and help prepare many decisions. At the end of his term, however, we had to make a decision with the greatest impact: to find a suitable successor for him – a decision that not only affects FIR, but also the entire institutional space our organization operates in as an affiliated institute of RWTH Aachen University and as a cluster-leading institute. Accordingly, the process of finding a new managing director was challenging and complex. As early as three years ago, we at the Board of Directors discussed various options. First of all, it was a question of designing a sustainable management structure, ensuring that FIR is able to continue to fulfill its mission in research, teaching and knowledge transfer in the best possible way. The search for the new managing director became more concrete at the beginning of 2022, when the vacancy was advertised. In order to put the selection process on a broad basis, we founded a search committee, consisting of members of the Board, representatives from the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia and from other research associations, and including FIR Director Günther Schuh, FIR Managing Director Professor Stich, and myself as Chairman of the Board. After a careful deliberation process, reviewing all documents and rounds of talks with several suitable candidates, the choice fell unanimously upon Professor Boos. I am extremely pleased about this choice, and I am convinced that Wolfgang Boos is exactly the right person to successfully continue to develop FIR and all the Centers in the Smart Logistics Cluster, set suitable key research focuses in the areas of the circular economy and digitalization, and to further promote the symbiosis between research and industry. wir freuen uns, Ihnen die erste Ausgabe der UdZ des Jahres 2023 präsentieren zu dürfen. Das Jahr 2023 begann mit dem Wechsel der Geschäftsführung. Zum 1. Januar verabschiedeten wir Professor Volker Stich als Geschäftsführer des FIR nach 26 Jahren an der Spitze. Diese herzliche Verabschiedung sowie die nicht minder herzliche Begrüßung der neuen Geschäftsführung hat uns beide sehr gefreut und motiviert. Die ersten 90 Tage waren geprägt von gegenseitigem Kennenlernen, Ideenaustausch und der Erarbeitung gemeinsamer Ziele. Natürlich darf der Wechsel an der Spitze in der FIR-internen Interviewreihe nicht unberücksichtigt bleiben: Lesen und erfahren Sie mehr über die Staffelübergabe im Interview „Führungswechsel am FIR“ (ab S. 8) mit der alten und neuen Geschäftsführung – darüber, wie das FIR sich in den letzten Jahr- zehnten entwickelt und gewandelt hat, wo uns die Zukunft hin- bringen wird, was das FIR so einzigartig macht und wie wir mit neuen Trendthemen die Zukunft mitgestalten wollen. Denn seit jeher sehen wir es als unsere Aufgabe an, neue Themen zu entdecken, auszuarbeiten und die Erkenntnisse daraus für Unternehmen in vielfältiger Hinsicht greif- und umsetzbar zu machen. Nachhaltigkeit ist eines der Trendthemen und zu Recht weiterhin in aller Munde: Sie hält in vielen Branchen der Industrie Einzug, erfordert eine Neupositionierung der Unternehmen sowie konkrete Lösungen für Produktion und Handel. Der Handlungsdruck der Unternehmen steigt entsprechend – ebenso aber auch die Chancen. Erfahren Sie im Artikel „Nachhaltigkeit in der Produktion – Bausteine des zukünftigen Produktionsmanagements“, wie sich der Trend von Massenproduktion und Massenkonsum hin zu Nachhaltigkeit, Effizienz und Individualität entwickelt (ab S. 38) und welche Möglichkeiten sich für Sie dadurch ergeben. Eine Branche, die unter Nachhaltigkeitsaspekten vor enormen Herausforderungen steht, ist die Verpackungsindustrie. Kreislaufwirtschaft ist immer ein wichtiger Grundpfeiler, wenn das Erreichen von Nachhaltigkeitszielen und wirtschaftlicher Erfolg Hand in Hand gehen sollen. Ab S. 77 erfahren Sie mehr über unser Forschungs- projekt ‚COPPA‘, in dem eine offene und skalierbare, digitale Plattform entwickelt wird, die Vernetzung und Informationsaustausch zwischen Unternehmen entlang der Wertschöpfungskette der Lebensmittelverpackungsindustrie fördert und eine lückenlose Nachverfolgung von Verpackungskunststoffen ermöglichen wird – ein weiterer wichtiger Schritt zur Eindämmung der Müllberge. S. 68 ff.) oder beim 26. Aachener Dienstleistungsforum, unserer ersten Fachtagung dieses Jahres. Liebe Leserinnen, liebe Leser, Dear Readers, we are pleased to present you the first issue of UdZ in 2023. The year started with a change in management: On January 1, we bid farewell to Professor Volker Stich as Managing Director of FIR after 26 years at the helm. The warm farewell and the no less warm welcome for the new management gave us both great pleasure and motivation. The first 90 days were characterized by getting to know each other, exchanging ideas, and working out common goals. Of course, this change at the top is also addressed by our interview series with FIR staff: Read and learn more about the passing of the baton in the interview “Change of Leadership at FIR” (p. 8) with the former and the present managing director, which offers insights on how FIR has developed and changed over the past decades, where the future will take us, what makes FIR so unique, and how we want to contribute to shaping the future by tackling cutting-edge topics. We have always seen it as our task to discover new trends and developments, prepare and advance them, and make our findings tangible, comprehensible, and implementable for companies in various ways. Many things will change, but we will keep offering what has been tried and tested, such as our expertise and our promise to continue to take up the needs of industry and develop practical solutions that are forward-looking, economically smart, ecologically responsible, and socially relevant. Sustainability is one of the trending topics and rightly continues to be on everyone's lips: it is making its way into many sectors of industry, requiring companies to reposition themselves and to find concrete solutions for production and trade. The pressure on companies to act is increasing accordingly – but so are the opportunities. Find out in the article “Sustainability in Production – Building Blocks of the Production Management of Tomorrow” how the trend is moving from mass production and mass consumption to sustainability, efficiency, and individuality (p. 38) and what opportunities this opens up for you. One industry that faces enormous challenges from a sustainability perspective is the packaging industry. And the circular economy is always an important cornerstone if achieving sustainability goals and economic success are to go hand in hand. Starting on p. 77, you can find out more about our COPPA research project, which develops an open and scalable digital platform to promote networking opportunities and an information exchange between companies along the value chain of the food packaging industry and enable seamless tracking of packaging plastics – another important step towards reducing the vast amounts of waste generated today. Digital transformation and how to implement it is a topic that continues to be high on the agenda, whether in research projects such as DiSerHub: Digital Services & New Business Models for the Automotive Industry, ‘TuWAs: Transformation Hub for Forming Value Chains for the Powertrain’ (p. 68 ff.), or at the 26th Aachener Dienstleistungsforum, our first symposium of the year. Digitale Services und Geschäftsmodelle werden für Unternehmen immer wichtiger, um die komplexer werdenden Bedürfnisse von Kunden zu befriedigen. Dieses Phänomen spielt auch für die Zukunft der Automobilbranche eine wesentliche Rolle. Mit diesem Transformationshub sollen Unternehmen dabei unterstützt werden, zu erkennen, welche digitalen Services und Geschäftsmodelle sich für sie eignen und wie sie diese in ihr bestehendes Geschäftsmodell integrieren können. Industrievertreter:innen gaben mit Best Practices aus verschiedenen Branchen Einblicke in die Vielfalt der Themen, Aufgabenstellungen und Perspektiven auf dem Weg vom Transaktions- zum Subskriptionsmodell. Sie berichteten über neueste Entwicklungen und teilten Eindrücke und Learnings aus ihren Projekten mit dem Publikum und den anderen Expert:innen (s. S. 34). Im kürzlich gestarteten Forschungsprojekt ‚diaMant: Partizipatives Wandlungsmanagement für digitale Geschäftsmodelle‘ (ab S. 62) steht das partizipative Wandlungsmanagement im Mittelpunkt, das anhand drei realer Kunde-Anbieter-Beziehungen praxisnah ergründet wird. Denn aktuell werden Maßnahmen des Wandlungsmanagements häufig nur einseitig aus der Perspektive des Anbieters oder der des Kunden betrachtet. Mit der immer stärker werdenden Inte- gration des Anbieters in die Wertschöpfungsprozesse des Kunden ist die isolierte Betrachtung des Anbieter- bzw. Kundenunternehmens zukünftig nur noch wenig sinnvoll. Dem begegnen mir mit unseren Forschungsergebnissen (Projektende: 11.2025). Digital services and business models are becoming ever more important for companies to meet the increasingly complex needs of customers. This phenomenon also plays a key role in the future of the automotive industry. The aim of this transformation hub is to help companies identify which digital services and business models are suitable for them and how to integrate them into their current business model. The Aachener Dienstleistungsforum took place digitally on March 15, 2023, under the motto “The Subscription Journey - Successfully Transforming from Product to Solution Provider”, with over 600 registrations. FIR and the Center Smart Services took the participants on a journey through the key development stages of data-based as-a-service business models: Service Excellence, Digital Products, and Subscription. Industry representatives provided insights into the variety of topics, tasks, and perspectives on the way from the transaction to the subscription model, presenting best practices from different industries. They reported on the latest developments and shared their experiences and learnings from their projects with the audience and the other experts present (p. 34). The recently launched research project ‘diaMant – Participatory Change Management for Digital Business Models’ (p. 62) focuses on participativechangemanagement,whichisbeingexploredinpractice based on three real-world customer-provider relationships. This is an important contribution, as transformation management measures are currently often exclusively explored from the perspective of the provider or that of the customer. With the increasing integration of the supplier into the customer’s value creation processes, the isolated consideration of the supplier or the customer company makes increasingly little sense. We are addressing this development with our research, whose results will be available in due course (the project is scheduled to run until 11/2025). FOCUS – INTERVIEW 10 / UdZ 01.23 Interview Change of Leadership at FIR Professor Stich and Professor Boos on the Development and Future Prospects of FIR Interview Führungswechsel am FIR Professor Stich und Professor Boos zu Entwicklung und Zukunftsperspektiven des FIR The turn of the year at FIR at RWTH Aachen University was marked by a change in leadership. After 26 years, Professor Volker Stich passed the baton to Professor Wolfgang Boos – a good time to reflect on the lessons and successes of the past and to look to the future. In the UdZ interview, Volker Stich, FIR’s managing director from 1997 to 2022, and Wolfgang Boos, the institute’s managing director since January 2023, talk about their experiences and their expectations for the further development of FIR, particularly in the areas of digitalization, sustainability, and the circular economy. UdZ: Professor Stich, how has FIR developed during your 26 years at the helm? What were your goals at the beginning, and how have they evolved? Stich: A major development was the move from our former location at Pontdriesch in downtown Aachen to the RWTH Aachen Campus site. Here we have a generous infrastructure with over 2,000 square meters at our disposal, the Demonstration Factory Aachen, and a conference center. The other significant development was the change of focus from business organization to IT. Today, we can no longer imagine business organization without IT, without digitalization. I didn’t start out in 1997 with a specific program in mind, but I had the intention of turning the institute into an economically viable enterprise, and I deliberately say Der Jahreswechsel am FIR an der RWTH Aachen stand auch im Zeichen eines Führungswechsels. Nach 26 Jahren übergab Professor Volker Stich den Staffelstab an Professor Wolfgang Boos. Ein guter Zeitpunkt, um die Learnings und Erfolge der Vergangenheit zu reflektieren und den Blick in Richtung Zukunft zu richten. Im UdZInterview sprechen Professor Stich, FIR-Geschäftsführer 1997 – 2022 und Professor Boos, FIR-Geschäftsführer seit 2023, über ihre Erfahrungen und ihre Erwartungen an die weitere Entwicklung des FIR im Kontext von Digitalisierung, Nachhaltigkeit und Kreislaufwirtschaft. UdZ: Professor Stich, welche Entwicklung hat das FIR in Ihrer 26-jährigen Amtszeit genommen? Welche Ziele hatten Sie zu Beginn und wie haben sich diese weiterentwickelt? Stich: Die große Entwicklung war der Umzug von unserem Standort am Pontdriesch in der Aachener Innenstadt auf den RWTH Aachen Campus. Hier haben wir eine großzügige Infrastruktur mit über 2.000 Quadratmetern, die Demonstrationsfabrik Aachen und ein Konferenzzentrum. Die weitere große Entwicklung war der Move von der Betriebsorganisation zur IT. Heute können wir uns eine Betriebsorganisation ohne IT, ohne Digitalisierung, gar nicht mehr vorstellen. Ich bin 1997 nicht mit einem Programm angetreten, aber ich hatte die Intention, aus dem Institut eine wirtschaftlich tragfähige Unternehmung zu machen, und ich sage ab-

Another goal was to put business organization into the contexts of IT and digitalization, and the third important point was: ‘Make business organization tangible’. Last but not least, we have also made our services more visible to the outside world in recent years. Compared to the early days, our profile has been massively raised by moving to RWTH Aachen Campus. UdZ: Professor Boos, you also look back on many years of experience in the environment of RWTH Aachen University. What are your key areas of expertise and how do they impact your new role at FIR? Boos: I worked at WZL, the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering at RWTH Aachen University, for almost 20 years – initially in a quite traditional role with a focus on corporate development and innovation management. Starting in 2008, I took over the area of corporate development as a senior engineer and was very much involved with process management, corporate strategies, and cooperation management. In 2010, I was allowed to develop the first group enrollment concept for industry partners on the RWTH Aachen Campus for the WBA Toolmaking Academy (WBA). sichtlich eine Unternehmung, nicht ein Unternehmen. Ein weiteres Ziel war, die Betriebsorganisation in den Kontext von IT und Digitalisierung zu bringen, und der dritte wichtige Punkt hieß: ‚Mache Betriebsorganisation anfassbar‘. Last but not least haben wir auch unsere Leistungen in den letzten Jahren stärker nach außen getragen. Im Vergleich zu den Anfängen hat sich unser Bekanntheitsgrad mit dem Umzug auf den RWTH Aachen Campus massiv vergrößert. UdZ: Professor Boos, auch Sie blicken auf eine langjährige Erfahrung im Umfeld der RWTH Aachen zurück. Welche bisherigen Schwerpunkte hatten Sie und wie fließen diese in Ihre neue Rolle am FIR ein? Boos: Ich war fast 20 Jahre am Werkzeugmaschinenlabor WZL der RWTH Aachen tätig – zunächst ganz klassisch mit den Schwerpunkten Unternehmensentwicklung und Innovationsmanagement. Ab 2008 übernahm ich als Ober- ingenieur den Bereich Unternehmensentwicklung und habe mich sehr viel mit Prozessmanagement, Unternehmensstrategien und Kooperationsmanagement beschäftigt. 2010 durfte ich das erste Gruppenimmatrikulationskonzept für Industriepartner auf dem RWTH Aachen Campus für die Werkzeugbauakademie (WBA) entwickeln. Die Gründung der
FOCUS – BEST PRACTICES 12 / UdZ 01.23 WBA war dann der nächste Schritt mit klarem Fokus auf Unikatfertigung und Fragestellungen zu Besonderheiten bei den Prozessen sowie dazu, wie man die Unternehmen aufbauen muss.ErsterAnknüpfungspunktmitdem FIR war der Aufbau der Demonstrationsfabrik Aachen. Meine in diesem Umfeld gesammelten Industrie-4.0-Erfahrungen und das, was ich zum Thema Kreislaufwirtschaft schon vorbereitet habe, werden die Themenfelder der Zukunft sein. Das bringe ich gerne am FIR ein. UdZ: Professor Boos, was hat Sie dazu bewogen, eine Position als Geschäftsführer am FIR in Betracht zu ziehen? Boos: Wenn so eine Position bei einem führenden Institut frei wird, fühlt man sich natürlich auch geehrt, in den Kreis der Kandidaten aufgenommen zu werden. Die Vielfalt und Aktualität der FIR-Themen haben mich immer schon gereizt, etwa die Instandhaltung als die Inkarnation von Kreislaufwirtschaft. Wenn ich Kreislauf-Instandhaltung richtig mache, dann kann ich die Produkte viel länger im Lebens- zyklus behalten. Service ist für mich ein ganz wesentliches Thema, in dem das FIR schon lange Zeit zu Hause ist. Mich hat das immer extrem beeindruckt. Als dann die Nachfolge anstand, habe ich mich natürlich gerne beworben. UdZ: Professor Stich, welche Highlights sind Ihnen aus Ihrer Zeit besonders in Erinnerung geblieben? Stich: Wir haben uns als eines der ersten Institute zertifizieren lassen, um das vorhandene Wissen managen und weitergeben zu können. Das war wichtig, weil wir unserem Auftrag entsprechend – Hochschulabsolvent:innen auf eine Industriekarriere vorzubereiten – regelmäßige Personalwechsel haben. Ich nenne das „Alle fünf Jahre löschen wir unser kollektives Gedächtnis“. Das weitere Highlight, das ich meinem Nachfolger jetzt übergebe, ist unsere aktive Mitarbeit bei den großen Wenden. Früher waren wir sehr stark fokussiert auf die Produktion. Heute geht es um die großen digitalen Wenden, die wir inhaltlich und kontextuell mitprägen dürfen, sowohl in der Produktion als auch in der Dienstleistungsbranche, der Mobilität und dem Health- Bereich. Das allergrößte Highlight, auf das ich sehr stolz bin, ist das FIR-Businessmodell. Es erklärt unsere wesentliche Vorgehensweise und das Ziel, an dem wir arbeiten: „How to close the Gap between Science and Industry“. Wir sind keine Grundlagenforscher, wir sind Anwendungsforscher. Wir versuchen, die relevanten Probleme aus der Industrie zu verstehen. Und hier freue ich mich besonders über meinen Nachfolger, von dem ich weiß und überzeugt bin: Er versteht die relevanten Probleme der Industrie, die wir dann mit unseren Ressourcen einer Lösung zuführen und in die Fläche tragen. Establishing the WBA was the next step, with a clear focus on one-of-a-kind production, questions about special process features, as well as how to set up companies. The first point of contact with FIR was the establishment of the Demonstration Factory Aachen. The Industrie 4.0 experience I gained in this environment and what I have already prepared on the concept of the circular economy belong to the key topics of the future. I’m happy to contribute this experience to FIR. UdZ: Professor Boos, what made you consider the position as managing director of FIR? Boos: When a position at a leading research institute becomes available, you naturally feel honored to be included in the circle of candidates. The diversity and topicality of the questions and issues addressed by FIR have always appealed to me, such as maintenance as the “incarnation” of the circular economy. If you do circular maintenance right, you can significantly increase the life cycle of products. Service is a very important topic for me, one that has been on FIR’s agenda for a long time. I have always been extremely impressed by this. So when the role as managing director was advertised, of course I was happy to apply. UdZ: Professor Stich, what highlights do you remember most from your time here? Stich: We were one of the first institutes to be certified for teaching in order to be able to manage and pass on existing knowledge. That was important because, in line with our mission – to prepare university graduates for a career in industry – we have regular changes of staff. I call this “losing our collective memory every five years.” The other highlight that I am now handing over to my successor is our active involvement in today’s major transitions and transformations. We used to be very focused on production. Today, it’s all about the major digital transformations that we contribute to shaping, both in terms of content and context, in manufacturing and in services, in mobility and health. The biggest highlight, of which I am very proud, is the FIR business model. It explains our essential approach and the goal we are working on: How to close the gap between science and industry. We are not basic researchers, as we have a focus on applied research. We try to understand and address relevant problems encountered by industry. And here I am particularly happy about my successor, who I am certain has a thorough understanding of the relevant problems encountered by industry today, which we seek to solve with the resources at our disposal. In a next step, we translate and disseminate our findings and solutions to industry.
UdZ 01.23 / 13 UdZ: Professor Boos, Sie bezeichnen sich selbst als Forscher und Unternehmer für nachhaltige Produktion. Was möchten Sie mit dem Team des FIR erreichen und welche Handlungsfelder sehen Sie? Boos: In den letzten 10 bis 15 Jahren haben wir über Industrie 4.0, die Digitalisierung der Industrie, eine Grundlage für den nächsten Schritt geschaffen – die Kreislaufwirtschaft. Wir können und müssen dieses Thema jetzt angehen. Es ist für unsere gesamte Gesellschaft relevant und entscheidend für unsere Zukunft. Das FIR ist in allen Forschungsbereichen ideal aufgestellt, um genau diesen Beitrag zu leisten. Mein Ziel ist es, dass sich das FIR in den Themenfeldern Kreislaufwirtschaft und Digitalisierung sowie den Aktivitäten in den Bereichen und auch in den Centern im Cluster Smart Logistik wahrgenommen wird und wir hier eine Ära prägen dürfen, ähnlich wie auch Professor Stich es geschafft hat. Ich glaube, diesbezüglich haben wir einen weiten Weg vor uns. UdZ: Professor Stich, wie sieht denn Ihre Agenda für die kommende Zeit aus und kommt das FIR darin vor? Stich: Selbstverständlich, das FIR spielt für mich nach wie vor eine Rolle. Wir haben uns darauf verständigt, dass ich auch weiterhin in Netzwerken aktiv sein werde, die für das FIR relevant sind. Über die Jahre haben wir uns hier eine gute Position erarbeitet. So bekleide ich u. a. Vorstandspositionen beim KVD, beim Club of Logistics und beim VDI. Privat werde ich mit Sicherheit meine Hobbys ausbauen. Dazu gehören Sport und Reisen. Im April werde ich zum dritten Mal Opa – auch das fordert mich und nimmt natürlich einen wichtigen Teil meines Lebens ein. UdZ: Professor Boos: Wie war Ihr Start am FIR und wie empfinden Sie das Leben und Arbeiten hier? Boos: Ich bin mit sehr offenen Armen empfangen worden und dank guter Vorbereitung durch meinen Vorgänger war der Übergang fast reibungslos. UdZ: Professor Boos, you describe yourself as a researcher and entrepreneur for sustainable production. What would you like to achieve with the FIR team and what fields of action do you consider relevant? Boos: In the last 10 to 15 years, through Industrie 4.0, the digitalization of industry, we have created a basis for the next major step: the transition to a circular economy. We can and must tackle this issue now. It is relevant for our society and decisive for the future of all of us. FIR is ideally positioned in all relevant research areas to contribute to this transition. My goal is that FIR will be known for addressing the concepts of a circular economy and digitalization and that the activities in our research areas and in the Centers of the Smart Logistics Cluster will become even more visible. We have the opportunity to shape an era here, similar to what Professor Stich has achieved during his time as managing director. I believe we have a long way to go in achieving this vision. FOCUS – BEST PRACTICES 14 / UdZ 01.23 Im letzten Jahr durfte ich schon das eine oder andere Highlight mitverfolgen, sei es die Weihnachtsfeier, die Mitarbeiter:innnen- oder die Mitgliederversammlung. Alle hier sind sehr offen, hilfsbereit und haben fundierte Kenntnisse über das, was sie vertreten. Es macht Riesenspaß, mit dem Team zu arbeiten. Ich bin zuversichtlich, dass meine 100-TageAgenda, die ich mir vorgenommen habe, funktioniert und wir gemeinsam den Weg gehen können. UdZ: Professor Stich, gibt es etwas, das Sie Professor Boos mit auf den Weg geben möchten? Stich: Natürlich möchte ich meinem Nachfolger alles Gute wünschen. Was ich ihm mitgeben möchte: Lerne die Mannschaft des FIR kennen, dann wirst du sie lieben. Auch wenn sie wechselt, ist sie immer hochmotiviert und teamorientiert. Da gibt es kein Oben oder Unten und man kann die Leistungsbereitschaft jederzeit abrufen. Wir haben immer versucht, unseren besonderen Geist zu erhalten. Jeder sollte – wie auch ich in den vergangenen 26 Jahren – jeden Tag gerne ans FIR kommen. Neben der Arbeit bieten wir hier viele Sportmöglichkeiten und unsere spezielle ehrenamtlich tätige Abteilung, das LuKo1 sorgt dafür, dass auch der Spaß nicht zu kurz kommt. UdZ: Professor Stich, what is your agenda for the coming period and does the FIR feature in it? Stich: FIR will continue to play an important role for me. We have agreed that I will continue to be active in various networks that are relevant to FIR. Over the years, we have established a strong network of partners. For example, I hold board positions at the KVD Service Association, the Club of Logistics, and VDI, the Association of German Engineers. In my private life, I will certainly dedicate more time to my hobbies. These include sports and traveling. In April, I will become a grandfather for the third time – this is as rewarding as it is demanding and obviously an important part of my life. UdZ: Professor Boos: How was your start at FIR and how do you feel about living and working here? Boos: I was welcomed with very open arms, and I was well-prepared for the role by my predecessor – the transition was very smooth. In the past year, I have already experienced a number of highlights: the Christmas party, the staff meeting, and the general assembly of members. Everyone here at FIR is very open, helpful, and has in-depth knowledge of their field of expertise. It’s a blast working with the team. I’m confident that the 100-day agenda I have set for myself will work out and that we can work effectively together in the long run. UdZ: Professor Stich, is there anything you would like to pass on to Professor Boos? Stich: Of course, I would like to wish my successor the best of success. What I would like to tell him: Really get to know the FIR team, and then you will love them. Even when the team keeps changing, they are always highly motivated and team-focused. There is no up or down and you can call on their willingness to perform at any time. We have always tried to keep this special spirit alive. If we get the best possible results here, we have an environment that not only attracts partners from industry and research, it also makes collaboration incredibly exciting for our employees. Everyone should know their role and contribution in the big “gearbox” that is FIR. I’m looking forward to that and to the fact that we can make a lot of exciting things happen.
